Where can I learn about the leather crafting?

We have been asked this question a few times, of where can a person learn about leather crafting and where to get into it. Well three very good sources are Tandy leather...which you can find at:

http://www.tandyleather.com.au/en-aud/home/home.aspx

Now Tandy is a good store but you will hear some bad mouthing of the store in some forums so far we have never had any problems with the leather that we have gotten off Tandy, good quality and pleasant people to do business with...how ever we are running this business in Sydney Australia their website is based out of the US so some things they do have problems getting a hold of or we have had to wait more then a few days to get our shipment so that can hurt a little bit. But over all great quality products. They have kits for beginners all the way up to start kits for a small leather business.

Second source that we truly enjoy and use a lot of is this one:

http://leatherworker.net/content/

There are people on this forum that have been doing leather working for 30+ years. It is a great place to meet other leather workers, and more importantly a great place to LEARN from these people. We have learned so much just on the forums alone, and its a nice place to show some of your work off and get advice on how to improve it.

The last resource that we will share today is another Tandy website which is:

http://www.leathercraftlibrary.com/

Here are a lot of videos on how to make different thinks from key fobs to goggles to top hats to corsets to...a lot of things...its worth the money to get a 3 month sub for and Georgia Hurst is a great teacher, that old bugger is a GREAT teacher!!! Clear instructions and patterns as well.

This only three sources there are a lot of other places to look for information and it is so worth knowing, even if you have no intention of actually doing hands on it's still a great palce to look and marvel at how creative people truly are.

Christmas/ Holiday money grabbing by companies

Here at Gibbinthegremlin we do things in a rather traditional way. Every product that is made here is done by hand, that includes all stitching, cutting and forming. No machines are involved once we get the raw product in our hands. Now keeping this rather traditional idea in your heads you will notice that we do not do a lot of "sales" or advertising with flashy signs that say "Buy this, get this, you need this, your partner or kids can not live with out this...?" and so forth.
The reason is a simple one really. Each year traditions are being swept away, some of these can be a good thing to lose (such as the way women were treated way back when) others such as family values and simply spending time with one's family and friends. We see these traditions being replaced by a huge materialistic tradition, everyone wants everything NOW instead of waiting for a great product it has to be now or they may throw a temper tantrum like a 4 year old (we have seen 40 year olds actually do this on the web more times than anyone can count!)
So we have decided that you will never see a cyber Monday or black Friday sale, or even a Christmas sale...these sales distract from the true meaning of this festive time.
Yes we like money do not get us wrong but we like the fact that people are spending time with family and friends and remembering what the spiritual holidays are truly about. Its not about what you get for Hanukkah, Christmas or what ever other holiday you choose to have, its about being with those you love, spending time with friends and family making memories that will out last any "thing" you buy them.
So this holiday time if you need to buy something to show your love to your friends and family put some thought into it, make them something even if its your grandma's secret recipe for fruitcake (that has way to much bourbon in it!) and simply spend time with them, as we are not here for ever. One day we will all pass into the great unknown, so make some memories that you can pull out of the old memory box and love years down the line.
So from our family to yours. Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, YuleTides to you and yours, and what ever other sayings that are used to wish each and everyone of you a very merry time!!
Oh and a P.S Do not drink to much of Aunt Bertha's egg nog or you may find yourself, naked and hanging off the Christmas tree...like last year.....you know who I am talking to!!!!

Latest prototype

Well we have come up with a new leather smart phone belt bag/case that we really like the feel and look of. It feels and looks more like a saddle bag then a traditional case. It sits great on a belt, no rubbing against your flesh or anything and it has a rugged feel and look.  So we are in the process of making 3 of these watch this space for more news!
